AFRICAN-CARIBBEAN LEUKAEMIA TRUST

Partner Organisations

Delete Blood Cancer UK is a new charity, launched in earlier this year and is working with ACLT to help support Roger’s appeal and donor registration events far and wide.

Deirdra Taylor of Delete Blood Cancer UK said: “Roger’s BeTheHero appeal is a great opportunity to let the public know how easy it is to sign up to be a potential stem cell donor. Our mission is to significantly boost donor registrants to vastly improve the chances of survival for blood cancer patients in the UK and worldwide.

Doctors first check for potential donors within close family members. But around 70 per cent of patients need healthy stem cells donated by an unknown volunteer donor to save their life. The donor’s stem cells help patients with blood cancer by replacing their unhealthy cells with new cells. Anyone could be the person that could save Roger’s life”

African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) charity specialises in recruiting bone marrow, blood and organ donors from diverse ethnic minority communities to UK donor registries towards the international donor search.

ACLT Co-Founder, Beverley De-Gale OBE said “Thousands of people die waiting for a matching bone marrow donor every year, largely due to the lack of volunteer donors. The tragic loss of life and talent IS preventable if more people took the time to donate and help others. Black people are very under-represented on all registers, people do care but need to show it, take personal ownership, act NOW and sign up.”

“Leukaemia can affect any one of us at any time of life. I cofounded the ACLT to find a donor for my son Daniel who was diagnosed aged 6, and eventually a match was found – that’s down to true grit, massive community awareness and mobilisation to act fast, by every means necessary. The unity amongst family and friends championing Roger's appeal is truly admirable. We need everyone including the Black Caribbean and African communities will come together, step up and BeTheHero to help find a match for Roger”.
